Things to see and do in Launceston

The Queen Victoria Museum & Art Gallery

The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery is the largest museum and art gallery in Australia located outside a capital city. It houses collections of Australia colonial art, contemporary craft and design, Tasmanian history and natural sciences.

The Penny Royal World & Gunpowder Mill
This fascinating and fully-working Cornmill originally stood at Barton, near Cressy, about thirty-eight miles from Launceston. It was built by Andrew Gatenby and his four sons in 1825, soon after they arrived in Tasmania as settlers from England. It was equipped with grindstones and machinery brought out by Gatenby and the Berwick in 1823 along with a wheelwright and millwright and was constructed in less than twelve months including a two mile mill-race-still in existence to this day-and a mill pond to act as a reservoir.

Cataract Gorge
With a cheap rental from Oodles, head to Launceston's Cataract Gorge, just a 2 minute drive from the city. Experience the natural wonder of the gorge from the Launceston Basin Chairlift.
In 1972, this magnificent chairlift was built spanning the huge natural basin often filled by the surging waters of the South Esk River. The chairlift covers some 457 metres, with terminal buildings at the First Basin (West Launceston) end and idling station at the Cliff Grounds side (Trevallyn). The central span of 308 metres is believed to be the longest single chairlift span in the world. The slow speed of the chairlift enables passengers to appreciate fully and photograph the spectacular views of this ancient rock gorge.

The Kings Bridge over "The Gorge" was floated into place in 1867.

City Park
One of Australia's finest Victorian parks.

J. Boag & Son Brewery

In 1883 the Esk Brewery was established by James Boag on the banks of the Esk River in Launceston.
J. Boag & Son currently offer tours of the historic brewery each weekday.  The tours include a full circuit of the brewery from the brewhouse to the packaging line, information on the brewing process and Boag's fascinating history.

Aquarius Roman Baths
Soak in the warm waters of the Tepidarium or the hot waters of the Caldarium at this 21st-century spa that relaxes the body, mind and spirit.

An informative commentary will take you on a historical journey where you will discover the stories and tales that shaped Launceston and the Tamar Valley. Travel in to the heart of the Tamar and view the navigable section of the spectacular Cataract Gorge.
